AROUND THE SOUND
Another week of Washington sports, and another recap of what’s happening in your home state.
October is here, which means breast cancer awareness season has officially started and there was pink everywhere you looked. As someone who’s lost family to cancer I’m all for it, all pink everything until there’s a cure.
Puyallup 63, Rogers 0 - at halftime.
You read that right, HALFTIME.
Rogers was down to its third-string quarterback, and Puyallup showed absolutely no interest in grading on a curve. By the time I packed up the cameras and was ready to go, the Vikings had put 63 on the board.
Stand out player of the night was Luke Parker, #5.
Parker was everywhere for Puyallup, making plays on both sides of the ball and helping set the tone for a Vikings team that came out firing from the opening whistle. He finished the night with an impressive stat line, showing exactly why he was one of the players to watch. Finishing the night with 141 yards on 5, yes just 5 catches. It’s must be nice to have a QB like Noah Smith #11 who can serve up receptions on a silver platter for you.

Touchdowns, and flags, and tuxedoed bears oh-my. It must be homecoming season.
If there’s a Washington state record for penalty flags thrown in a high school football game, someone might want to check the tape from this one.
I’m pretty sure the flag saw the field more than some of the athletes on either team and most likely left the officiating crew with tennis elbow.
Every time it felt like the game was finding a rhythm, another little yellow piece of laundry appeared on the turf. Let’s just say there was no love lost between GK and Oly. I don’t know of a rivalry between these two teams but this could easy be the start of one.

Puyallup Roughriders vs Burien Royal Knights
The weekend wasn’t over yet; I spent a foggy Sunday morning covering the local peewee teams. I made it out for about a game and a half of the Puyallup Rough Riders, because photographing a media day, a soccer game and two football games wasn’t enough again for one weekend.
The first- and second-graders are probably my favorite age group to photograph. They’re not quite aggressive enough to look intimidating, but they’re still completely committed to the game and they run around looking like tiny bobbleheads with shoulder pads.
There’s something great about watching them chase the ball, celebrate every play, and occasionally forget which direction they’re supposed to be running. Who needs scores and stats when at this age love of the game is at an all time high.
PHOTO OF THE WEEK
This photo comes courtesy of GK vs Oly Friday and really shows that great play doesn’t always end in great results. #4 should be proud of this catch even if the bears fell short under the lights.
NEXT UP
More football. More photos. Hopefully fewer flags. Summer vs Rogers next Friday 10/09.
A picture is worth 1,000 words, but it doesn’t always tell the full story.
